The Public Art Committee strives to add a new piece of public art to the City of Havre de Grace yearly. Public Art projects are funded through a mixture of donations and grants. Project proposals are collected through an open call and presented to the community for feedback.

Lifted

a Sculpture by Thomas Sterner

From the Artist: The “Lifted” sculpture portrays a life size person being lifted by birds and is meant to inspire and be uplifting. The person is a stainless-steel flat silhouette, with the front highly polished (to a near mirror surface) pointing downward to allow a viewer to see their own reflection and consider their presence in this space as part of the sculpture. The birds are realistically formed, also from heavy stainless plates. The pedestal will be a heavy wall round stainless-steel pipe 4” diameter so as not to occupy precious pedestrian space of the sidewalk. The connection to the existing concrete is simple and secure without disruption to the site. The sculpture contributes to a stronger sense of place at this interesting intersection (suggested). Simple lighting can emphasize the piece for night viewing, with the reflection potentially creating a nice illumination of the walkway. The sculpture will be interesting from afar and up close, and recognizable and connected to other sculptures along the Havre de Grace Sculpture Trail.

About
the Artist

Thomas Sterner is a full-time artist living near Union Mills MD, where he built his ‘Art Factory’ studio, with large woodshop, welding area, and a painting/printmaking loft, nestled in the forest on the edge of farmland. He works in various materials including steel, wood, paint and ink. The new outdoor welding area with hoist and trolley assists in the fabrication of large public work commissions. Thomas’ art communicates thoughtful or humorous ideas using varied techniques and materials, with unusual juxtaposition of image, action or title to engage the viewer. The goal of his art is to make people smile and think.
